Tantric Love Retreat

The Tantric Love Retreat is an opportunity for you to become acquainted with, and drink deeply from, the well of experience that is Tantra. The quote above from the great Tantric master Osho captures the essence of the Tantric Love Retreat. First we awaken the raw fire of our vital life force or sexual energy. Then we guide this energy up the body, where it touches the heart and becomes a force of love. From there, this energy, which we call Kundalini, rises up further through your being until its fragrance fills you with the knowing that you are one with all that is.

The retreat is structured to accommodate both newcomers and those of you who have already started your exploration of Tantra. If you have a deep commitment to awakening, and if you are willing for profound transformation of your reality and your sense of yourself, then this retreat is for you. You are welcome on your own or with a partner, and persons of all sexual orientations are invited.

The theme of this retreat points to two essential elements of Tantric practice:

Shakti is a dakini (female tantra teacher) with a full and lively practice based in Cape Town and has been running retreats across South Africa. She has extensive experience in retreat facilitation and a deeply lived understanding of Tantric work. She holds Ph.D. in Sosial Anthropology. The Drakensberg is the ideal setting for this retreat. This exquisite mountain range has been named "Dragon Mountain" because it evokes exactly the quality of a dragon for the onlooker. The Tantric Practice Retreat is a level 3 Tantra retreat of the Advait Tantra School for those who have already done the Tantric Awareness Retreat and on average only happens every third year. This retreat takes you deeper into the practice of what we explored during the Tantric Awareness Retreat. Our assumption is that we have all now stepped over the doorway of the unconscious in our eroticism, and we are ready to explore somewhat deeper – enact and live more strongly what is there, and get a bit more creative with it. This is a retreat for committed spiritual warriors.

The Venue

Tantra for lovers of life

TANTRA is a practice of awareness that uses sexual energy. Tantric practice can take you to an experience of ecstatic, unconditional love for yourself and all of existence. It can take relationships to another level. I invite you, on this year's Valentine's Day, to be a Lover of Life through the practice of Tantra. The workshop is suitable for both couples and single people who are on a path of consciousness. I will make sure that numbers are even so that single people can practice with each other.

Tantric meditations

The morning is an introduction and practice of Tantric meditation techniques. We use breath, movement and sound to circulate sexual energy and move it up the chakras. These meditations are done fully clothed, and with limited body contact. The focus is no experiencing the flow of energy through your own body, and between partners.
Tantric touch

The afternoon is an introduction to and practice of Tantric touch – how to use sensual, present touch to open up the energy flow of a partner. For this exercise, more skin exposure and contact will be helpful. Bring: Blanket and sheet.

Bring some sensual food to share for a lunch table (optional).

Releasing sexual trauma
the Tantric way

Sexual trauma

Sexual trauma can occur through the subtlest of means. Its impact on our individual lives and on society is vastly underestimated. It is an area of work in which I have extensive experience, both in individual and group contexts. This workshop brings you my my approach to working with sexual trauma and on how I listen to the songs being sung by these old wounds.

Is sexual trauma caused only be sexual touch? What about the impact of sexual innuendo and emotional incest? What is the impact of sexual trauma at various stages of our lives?

Sexual trauma memories are often held in the unconscious. Here we take a good look at how these unconscious memories make themselves known - through body/celllular memory, through associations in sexual life and through erotic fantasy. When we recognize these ways in which the body reveals its stories, we can encourage the old songs to be sung so that what was denied, can now be accepted and integrated into the body. An excellent tool for working with the body's response to trauma memory is following the rhythm of contraction and expansion that happens in the nervous system when old trauma gets touched. I discuss how I do this in practice, and teach you practices to do so yourself.

The Tantric response

The practice of Tantra asks of us to be total - to be willing to feel every emotion that arises, to sit in the fire of sometimes unbearable sensation. When we can be with the body's wise response in patience and totality, a deep integration happens in us. We find our "NO". We find our "YES." We honour our past stories and let them go. We come closer to the realization of who we really are.
We open up to a new song. Our desire flows in free, but healthy, ways.

The first six months of next year are packed with opportunities for Tantric practice. In the year that is past, Stephen joined me, and a range of courses and retreats have become established. More people are wanting to start Tantric practice, and a significant number of you are ready to go deeper. With the recent First African Conference for Sacred Sexual Educators, our engagement has also become more international. In order to accommodate the range of experience amongst students, we have more events at a range of levels. To help you choose what is appropriate for you, we have made the levels explicit:

A general note on all courses: feel free to attend any of these for the second time. Students who have done so have been able to access greater depths of their own beings and have experienced the events as if for the first time.

1. Tantra foundation courses

The Tantra Foundation courses give you an opportunity to practice the fundamental principles of Tantra systematically over time with a group of people. This will considerably deepen your learning and the integration of the practice in your life. The three courses are based on the seven main objectives of my Tantra practice as outlined in http://totalitytherapy.com/about.html. The courses follow a logical progression: We start with processing and enactment of what is in the unconscious (level 1) and then continue to the integration of masculine and feminine in us (level 2). Only when this work is done, are students ready to approach the sexual meditation of Tantra (level 3).

This course is a first and powerful step towards the freedom that Tantra offers as a practice. In our collective psyches the dream of finding the Soulmate moves strongly - that 'other' who will meet and fulfill me completely. Level 3: Embodied Love
To be announced – second half of 2010

When you have immersed yourself in the practices addressed in course 1 and 2, you are ready to work with sexual energy as a force of presence. The objective of this course is to get you ready to experience the full potential of your sexuality. This involves developing increased awareness in the body, expanding your heart capacity and practicing presence in every moment, including your most intimate ones. Students who have completed both the Tantric Awareness and Tantric Practice Retreats will also be allowed on this course.

2. Tantric Practice for Women: An ongoing course

Tantra is a practice that cultivates awareness of our oneness with existence through sexual awakening. This happens through the opening of the chakras. Chakras are energy centers in the body where consciousness collects around particular patterns. Typically in sexual encounter, we send our sexual energy outwards. We may experience deep bliss for a while, but generally this does not last. With Tantric awareness, our sexual vitality starts to move up our bodies like a snake that uncoils, from the root or base of the body all the way up through the crown. Sexual energy moves from the first chakra up. This process is often known at the Uncoiling of the Snake (sexual energy or kundalini). The ongoing course on Tantra for women consists of regular mini workshops in which we will systematically work through the chakras. There will be four or five workshops per chakra. Each workshop will be an exploration of a specific element of women’s sexuality related to that chakra. You will benefit most from the mini workshops if you attend them from the beginning. However, the workshops will be structured in such a way that you can attend any workshop at any stage (that is, you can enter and exit the process as it suits you.) I will advertise each workshop in a separate mail as well.

Sessions

From January 2010, we are changing our fee structures to make sessions more accessible and flexible. The fee for a session with Shakti or Stephen will be R450 - no price increase from this year. Here are your options:

One hour session: Introductory of follow-up consultation which takes the form of a discussion; practice is unlikely.
Two hours session: This has been the standard time of sessions for the last three years. The extra hour allows time to do practical/experiential sessions work.
Three hours and beyond: Couples’ sessions usually are three hours as we will be engaging the realities of the relationship as well as both individuals present. Individual sessions can go up to three hours or longer. This usually happens when deep transformation processes are catalyzed.

Sessions with Stephen: As Daka, Stephen works under my guidance. Sessions with Stephen are usually follow-ups on sessions with Shakti. I first assess what is required.
Sessions with Shakti and Stephen: If Stephen and Shakti are both required in a session, our joint fee is R600 an hour. Sessions with both of us can bring profound release, particularly for women and for couples.

Who is this retreat for?

On female sexual energy

Sexual energy is a tremendous source of vitality and life force. When we own and live our sexual energy, we incarnate – we come to embody the goddess within. We wake up to the moment. Through our sexual flow as women, the worlds are birthed. And yet this potential lies dormant in so many of us. The snake, the kundalini, the origin of our embodied vitality, is there, at the base of the spine, but it slumbers, and it rarely gets touched.Until the wild woman in us wakes up to who she really is.

Uncoiling the snake

In my work with Tantra, an ancient eastern tradition that follows sexual energy as a doorway to consciousness, I have learnt that sexual awakening is linked to the opening of the chakras or "energy wheels" (represented by the spirals on the front page image). When the opening of the chakras happens in the body, it literally feels like an energy snake that uncoils at the base of the body and rises up through the crown of the head. For me personally, this rising brings a soft ecstasy that ripples onto the farthest shores of my life… It also brings a deep contentment with existence.

Sexual energy becomes illuminated when the repressions that block us at each of the chakras or energy points in the body are lifted. These repressions are the result of our conditioning, our patterning and the scars that are left by our life experiences. I believe that it is possible to bring our repressions to awareness and release them by working in a sacred circle of women.

What happens on the retreat

My focus is on the awakening of consciousness, not on teaching technique or improving performance (though these things follow of their own accord). I use the following methods to evoke awareness:

We process body memories through acting and embodiment.
We deepen awareness of female sexuality through breath work and other Tantric techniques.
We reflect on our stories and vision our "this-here-now" realities through creating with the earth and writing.
We meditate and do guided visualizations to deepen our awareness of essence flowing through us.
We use sound, chanting, movements and dancing focused on a particular expression of our sexual energy to awaken the body to its inherent knowing.
We have strong interactions with nature and the elements to reconnect us to our being-of-the-earth, the origin of our sexual energy.

The venue

The farm n'au !ma, which is run in deep respect for nature as a place of retreat and ceremony, is situated between Montague and Ladysmith, at the foot of the Anysberg. Accommodation is provided in beautiful Karoo style houses with broad verandas, fireplaces, gas stoves and fridges. There is an exquisite kloof on the farm, and some delicious dams. The night sky of the Karoo is something to experience. The farm is about 4 – 5 hours from Cape Town, and 3 hours from George.

Course objective

This course is a first and powerful step towards the freedom that Tantra offers as a practice. It requires of you to embrace both your fears and your desires in the realm of the erotic, and to feel the feelings that emerge from here. You will be taught techniques to process the emotional and mental patters that arise from the practice. The course can offer powerful release and healing from old experiences and expectations around sexuality. Expert facilitation will ensure that the course meets each individual where they are at.

Aims

Aim 1: Lifting taboos and suppressions

In the days when Tantra was only practiced as a secret mystery tradition, one of the first steps that a new initiate had to take was to break their cultural taboos. If you were raised a Jain Hindu, you would be asked to eat meat and drink alcohol – both of which are highly taboo in that culture. Breaking your personal or cultural taboos asks of you to face your biggest fears. In this course, we will engage our personal and collective taboos in a fun but challenging way.

Suppressions are all experiences that have become unconscious in you. Most often, these were experiences that were unpleasant or frightening to you in the past – emotionally, physically or spiritually. What we are not able or willing to feel completely in the moment, becomes trapped in the body as unconscious patterns that influence everything – especially our sexuality. We will work gently at touching these places and allowing full consciousness to return.

Aim 2: Embracing fantasies and desires

By paying attention to what you desires and fantasies are, you can integrate unconscious or hidden aspects of your being. Whereas lifting taboos and suppressions is about facing your fears, this aim is about saying yes to your desires. One of our dictums in Tantra is: How much bliss can you stand? Since many of us have been raised in traditions of religious austerity, it takes some individuation to embrace pleasure as a gateway to higher understanding.

We will encourage this individuation by exploring your fantasies and desires and giving space for them to be expressed in appropriate ways.

Aim 3: Integrating polarities

One main reason why we stay stuck in limited beliefs about ourselves is that our ego structures are bound up in polarity. Polarities split experience into opposites – what is desired and what is feared, what attracts us and what we are repulsed by, what we see as good and what as evil. These polarities are mostly unconscious in us, and as with fears and desires, they govern and direct our lives.

To go deeper in awareness of who we really are, it is important to find ways of processing these polarities. On this course, you will be taught tools to identify and integrate the polarities that limit your sense of yourself. In the process, you will develop a witness – the ability to observe the story of your life without taking it so seriously.

Who is the course for?

This course for people who are on a committed quest for greater awareness and presence in their lives, and who want to include their sexuality in this journey. This is a foundation course so no previous experience is needed. You are also welcome to do the course a second time as most certainly new material will be revealed to you. The second chacra which is in our sacral region, is where we feel our sense of safety in the world. It is the nest from whence we venture into relating. If we feel unsafe, we sense this as a contraction in the pits of our stomachs. As part of my ongoing series for women on the chakras, I am focusing our next women's workshop on sexuality and safety. I have been very aware recently that our ability as women to feel sexual - to allow ourselves to express our sensuality, and for that to be seen - is strongly influenced by whether we feel safe or not. For some women, feeling unsafe has become an unconscious habit that keeps us permanently closed. Some of us have had sexual experiences in the past that felt unsafe. Even if you generally feel safe, it is good to know that you will be able to respond appropriately if ever you did not feel safe.

In this workshop, we will focus on how we perceive men in our world, and how that gets reflected in the relationship between our inner masculine and feminine. Our inner masculine is the one who knows how to keep us safe; if we are in right relationship to him, we can walk through the world feeling safe, open and free in our sexuality.

Yoni is the Tantric word for the vulva. The yoni holds qualities of awareness that are so vital that Buddha called the yoni the gateway to nirvana (see picture above). And yet, many of us have grown up to be suspicious of the yoni. The word "cunt" is used as a derogatory term, and yet its original meaning, "kund", is that of the sacred container into which all the rivers of life flow. In this workshop, we will use movement, visualization, inner dialogue and breath work to access the wisdom and beauty that comes so us through our yonis.

On Conscious Sexuality

If we know how to use our sexual energy, it can take us into a beautiful flowering of the heart, into deep states of bliss and serenity. Sexual energy can also open up our authentic wildness! However, for many of us today, this potential of our sexuality is not being fully realized. Some of the common reasons are:

We have been conditioned to suppress our natural sexuality in some way.
Out of habit, sex has become a rushed explosion of pent-up energy, rather than an experience of loving, deepening, merging.
Experiences that we have had in the past (these can be sexual, emotional, physical, spiritual) got stuck in the body and are blocking our energy flow.
We are simply not in our bodies enough, loving being in our bodies enough!

The good news is that it is infinitely possible to open the flow of your natural sexuality into a conscious expression again, no matter what your age is, and whether you have a partner or not. What it takes is a willingness to shed some illusions, and to get conscious with your life!

The retreat

This retreat is an introduction into the art of sacred sexuality. My specific intent is to design it around the participants; where you are at and what you need. I hope to make some of the basic concepts of conscious sexuality clear to you, and to give you a deep (and blissful) experience of what is possible, in your body. Since this is an introductory workshop, you will not be required to expose yourself in any way that is not comfortable for you. The retreat will also introduce you to practices that you can take into your daily life and/or into your relationship.

For those of you who have already done some work with me and would like to deepen your understanding and for those who wish to go deeper after the weekend's retreat I offer an additional day (Sunday 4 pm to Monday 4 pm) in which we can explore some more. You are welcome to bring your questions and requests.

The presenter

Shakti is a full time teacher of conscious sexuality. She has a passion for embodied awakening - using the body as an alive, responsive vehicle to help us discover the truth of who we really are. Shakti is based in Cape Town and runs workshops and retreats in Cape Town and elsewhere in South Africa. She also does private consultations. Shakti has a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology. The venue

The Osho Neo Monastery is a unique forest venue constructed and managed by people who glow with the light of awareness. Accommodation is provided in A-frame wooden huts lovingly made by the owner. The gathering hall rises up out of the forest and opens up to it on all sides. This is a back-to-nature weekend, the best way to get back into our natural sexuality - with manually heated showers, candles and fires. Food is vegetarian and always exquisite.
